From the 25th October, 2023 edition of TV3’s “New Day” discussion which was aired live, on the TV3 channel and shared through many of their Social Media handles including Facebook.
I paid particular attention to the discussion that was centered on the sufferings of many of our citizens along the Volta River, as a result of the spillage being done from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams by the Volta River Authority (VRA), particularly, communities in North, Central and South Tongu Districts and also in Asuogyaman District whose people Hon. Thomas Ampem Nyarko serve as their Member of Parliament.
In fact, I was taken aback by an allegation made by Pius Enam Hadzide, one of the Panelists and a Government Official to the effect that, the Volta River Authority had organized Simulation and Sensitization Exercises across Asuogyaman, prior to the spillage and that, the MP was invited but failed to honor the invitation. Suggestive that, we are where we are today, because someone did not attend a simulation program.
It must be put on record that, Hon. Thomas Ampem Nyarko never received any such invitation from the VRA, NADMO or any other institution to any Simulation and Sensitization prior to the spillage and checks from other affected constituencies point to same, that, none of the Members of Parliament have been given any such invitation.
This allegation by Pius Enam Hadzide at the time our people are suffering is frivolous and borne out of callousness on his part and on the part of the government, who have consistently showed that, they have no regard for the people whose sacrifices in the past and even today gave Ghana the energy we have enjoyed all these years.
It must be said however, that, at this point, where people’s lives, livelihood and huge investments are threatened, the best we should be doing is to direct our efforts towards relieving the plight of the people who have become suddenly vulnerable through no fault of theirs. It is therefore in this spirit that, the Member of Parliament of Asuogyaman; Hon. Thomas Ampem have constantly visited the affected areas within the Constituency and have been supporting them both financially and with relief items. The most recent of these supports was on Saturday 21st October, 2023 when the Honorable MP together with the Chairman of the NDC, Hon. Johnson Asiedu Nketia visited three of the most affected communities and donated relief items and cash to the victims.
Rather unfortunately, apart from going round in the name of collecting data, the people are yet to see any tangible action taken by NADMO and Government of which Pius is a part, in alleviating the suffering of the people in Asuogyaman.
It is therefore imperative on anybody who gets the opportunity like that offered Pius on National TV, to use the opportunity to solicit for support both from government and other organization for the people, but not to use the opportunity on baseless allegations which at the end does not bring any solutions to the table.
